Praise and Healing

“Why God?”

I know this guy named Mike. Mike doesn’t believe in God. He says “If there is a God, then why are there babies born with diseases?   If there is a God, He would not let us suffer, especially babies. Look at all the suffering in this world. Don’t talk to me about God. “

I myself have a younger sister, named Michele, who has been very sick for a long time. Sometimes I wonder why all the prayers that have been prayed on her behalf don’t seem to change anything. She’s not getting any better.  In fact, she’s getting worse.

Speaking of sisters, in the book of John chapter 11, two sisters named Mary and Martha, sent an urgent message to their Dear Friend, Jesus, to come right away because their brother, Lazarus, was very sick. They had seen Jesus do many miracles and knew He could help them.  Interestingly, after receiving the message, Jesus did not answer their request right away.  In fact, He waited two days before leaving to go to their home. By that time, Lazarus had died.

When Jesus finally arrived, the sisters were distraught. Why did Jesus take so long to answer them? Why was this allowed to happen?  Martha said that if Jesus was there, Lazarus would not have died.  Jesus responded that Lazarus would live again and Martha misinterpreted the meaning of Jesus’ statement.  She believed in a future resurrection but Jesus wanted her to know that HE IS the Resurrection today, not only for a future time.  He said that anyone who believed on Him would live, even if they died. As the sisters grieved, Jesus was deeply moved and when He saw the tomb where Lazarus was laid, He cried.

He cried? Yes, that is what the Word Says. He cried. Jesus knows the pain of death and of unanswered questions. He told the sisters that God would be glorified in this sorrow.  Of course, there were scoffers right there whispering,  “He made the blind see, but He can’t make a dead man come to life?” Wow. They scoffed AFTER witnessing  Jesus give sight to the blind?  Wow.  Scoffers who misinterpreted Jesus’ tears and when Jesus heard them He was once more deeply moved.  He hurts with us and for us.

There will always be scoffers. There will always be those that disbelieve even after witnessing miracles. There will always be those that misinterpret the realities of living in this sin wrecked world. However, Jesus will be right there crying with us when we can’t see the miracle just yet in our suffering, or when we ask “why?” The story ends with Lazarus walking right out of that grave to the amazement of all who witnessed it. God indeed was glorified and Jesus proved He has power over death.

Maybe my sister won’t get better.  She has, like Martha, believed and received Jesus.  Even though healing may not come in her lifetime here on earth, she will live eternally with Christ when she dies. She will be perfect again as will all who believe in the resurrected Son of God. Is there a situation in your life that leaves you with unanswered questions? What is stopping you from trusting Him? When have you believed in the power of the Resurrected Jesus?

Jesus said “I have told you these things so that in Me you may have Peace. In THIS world you WILL have trouble. But take heart!  I have overcome the world!” John 16:33
