Praise and Healing

Happy New Year

Teach us to realize how short our lives are. Then our hearts will become wise. Psalm 90:12

As I flipped my devotional calendar this morning to January 2, I remembered a conversation that I’d had with my sisters in the mid 1970’s. We were all sitting around the table calculating how old we would be in the year 2000. “Wow, I’ll almost be 40!” and ” Oh man that’s when I’ll really be old!” we exclaimed in astonishment. So when our visits to Grandma Lucy’s house or Aunt Ida’s house would be greeted with cheek pinching comments on how much we’d grown and how fast “time flew”, I secretly wondered what the heck they meant! Time seemed to be going so slow for me! I felt that I’d never turn 16 (the magic driving age) let alone finish high school!

Now over 4 decades later I understand what Grandma meant! I can vividly remember that conversation with my sisters like it was yesterday, yet it is 2020! Incredible. Time sure did fly and here we are at the beginning of another new year! A year which holds unknown joys and sorrows. It can be intimidating when we don’t know what is coming. It can cause us to be hesitant and to lose heart. I believe it was Adrienne Monk when told that the upcoming New Year would be great said, “if it’s unknown, how do you know it’s so great?”

“It’s great because God is there! For those of us who follow Christ, the Grace that has been given to us compels us to tell others about the Message of the Gospel. We believe it is a matter of Life and Death and so we don’t lose heart. We can venture into 2020 with the assurance that our God is not bound by Time. He knows the beginning and the end. He’s already there. No matter what comes our way in 2020 He’s in control. Do you believe Him? Will you trust that He knows what is best?

Hebrews 12:1-3 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a huge crowd of witnesses to the life of faith, let us strip off every weight that slows us down, especially the sin that so easily trips us up. And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us. We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus, the Champion who initiates and perfects our faith.Because of the joy awaiting Him, he endured the cross, disregarding its shame. Now He is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne. Think of all the hostility He endured from sinful people; then you won’t become weary and give up.

    1. Awesome!
John 15:1 says “I am the true Vine, and my Father is the Gardener.”

  11. I read recently these words “I didn’t count the days, I made the days count” in the newspaper. These words were voiced by a recently released inmate. In prison he earned a degree in law.
I am 91 years old. Love the Lord. Served him. But I can’t say I always made the days count.
There were days in my youth that the words of the song “Years I spent in vanity and pride, caring not my Lord was crucified” aptly fit who I was then.

    1. My sister and I were just talking about this the other day. The older we get the more we realize how much time we wasted in our youth but God is a God of Grace and when we come to Him and ask for forgiveness He generously gives it! I think you are a wonderful example of a TRUE Christian and although you may have regrets over your past God has placed you right where you are now to be a blessing to those around you.
Thankfully His mercies are new every morning. Lamentations 3:22-23

May we go boldly to speak the TRUTH in LOVE to those we love and to those that are far from Him.
