Silk Flowers

Matthew 7:15- 20 – Jesus said “Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves. By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

I drove by a house once that had some of the most beautiful, colorful flowers I had ever seen. The ones close to the house were spectacular. Being a flower-aholic, I slowed down whenever I passed by that way just to admire those beautiful looking flowers. It wasn’t until one very cold winter day after an early snowfall that I passed by that way and noticed those same colorful flowers sticking out of the snow! They were fake!  Apparently the owner hadn’t removed them and when I realized that they were fake I laughed out loud!  It was incredible. They looked so real from afar off. All winter long  those colorful flowers stuck out of the snow and I laughed to myself every time I passed by there.

It reminds me of the parable Jesus taught when He was here on earth. In Luke 10 verses 25 to 37  an “expert” in the Law tried to test Jesus and asked what the greatest commandment was. Jesus told him it was to love the Lord your God with all your heart and to love your neighbor as yourself. Being so “religious” and wanting to justify himself  the “expert” asked Jesus “who is my neighbor”? Jesus responded with the parable of the Good Samaritan.  It is important to remember that in Jesus’ day the Jews despised the Samaritans and vice versa.

In reply Jesus said  “A man (probably Jewish) was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he was attacked by robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead. A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a Levite when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, brought him to an inn and took care of him. The next day he took out two denari and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Look after him,’ he said, ‘and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.”“Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?” Jesus asked . The “expert” in the law replied, “The one who had mercy on him.” Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

I think it is hilarious that Jesus told this “expert” this parable.  How many of us who call ourselves Christians just go through the motions of church attendance without ever really producing any fruit? How many of us actually pray for our “enemies” let alone show them kindness?  Like that house with the fake flowers, if I would have gotten up close to them I would have seen that they didn’t produce any fragrance or attract any bees. In the same way, Christ wants us to produce fruit and show our love for Him by acts of love and kindness towards others. Then people will know we are His!

If you are a Christ follower what can you do today to show love and kindness

to someone who is not like you?
